Solar Buddy Lights for Learning

Practical workshop covering renewable energy and its role in addressing energy poverty, leading into a hands-on activity where students assemble individual solar lights which will equip students in villages along PNG’s Kokoda Track with enough light to study and read by after dark. Suited to all levels of high school and students with an interest in renewable energy.

Helping Hands

Practical workshop covering the anatomic structure of the hand, the prevalence and impact of hand injuries and the contribution of biomedical engineering in development of prosthetics. Students follow detailed instructions using basic tools to assemble simple prosthetic limbs which will be donated to children in need, giving them the chance to perform tasks which most of us take for granted. Best suited to Year 11 and 12 students with an interest in biology and/or engineering.

Water Works

Practical workshop covering the importance of clean and safe drinking water and sanitation, the scientific concepts of water filtration and the potential to reduce the prevalence of avoidable blindness and other water-borne diseases. Students assemble an emergency water filter which will be donated into a refugee camp in central Africa and design an artwork to be attached to a more permanent water filter in an African village. Best suited to upper primary or high school students with an interest in human-centred design.
